Torches have two main functional uses to us underwater the first being to light up the environment with artificial light whether it be a night dive, in a cave, wreck or under ledges. The second function is bringing colour back to our environment. Water absorbs colour fragments which can make corals and sponges look dull compared to the vibrant colours that they really are. Shining an artificial light will bring back the vibrancy. A difference can be noted between standard torches and video lights where the video lights have a constant beam without hot spots for a cleaner even picture.

In advanced diving activities a primary torch is used as a communication tool and should have a battery capacity to exceed the planed duration of the dive, backup torches are used in case of a failure of the primary light, with advances in battery technology some 'backup' style lights pack enough punch to continue a dive with a downed primary if you still have enough redundancy in lights.
