The BCD (Buoyancy Control Device) is an integral part of a diver's SCUBA gear set allowing them to control their buoyancy in the water by inflating or deflating to be positive, neutral or negatively buoyant. BCDs come in either jacket or harness style configurations suiting single tank, twin and side mount diving.

Jacket style BCDs are very popular for recreational divers due to their highly adjustable fit and price point. Designs include male and female tailored fits, large storage pockets and many will also come with integrated weight options. The bladder on a classic jacket style BCD means that it will inflate over the back and sides of the BCD. This allows the diver to sit comfortably in a vertical position whilst on the surface howeve,r underwater it can add difficulty to obtaining a flat trim position. The adjustability of the BCD makes donning and doffing of the unit quite easy and is another draw card to this unit.

Rear inflation BCDs keep the same high level of adjustment as jacket BCDs however the bladder is positioned only at the rear of the unit which helps the diver to obtain a prone trim position whilst underwater.

Harness and wing systems have originated from technical diving but are now also commonly used in recreational diving. They are popular for their streamlined design meaning minimal clutter across the divers front and also for their sturdiness. The harness is attached to a backplate that can be made from multiple materials including steel, suitable for cold water where extra weight is required, and aluminium or carbon fiber for warmer of fresh water where less weight is needed. The backplate provides stability to the system keeping the tank secure on the diver's back. A wing is then added to provide lift, these may be single or twin tank wings with different lift capacities. Being a component based system the diver can easily transition between single and twin tank diving by simply attaching alternate wings. Integrated weight options are also now common on many harness and wing style systems. Some brands have colour options to personalise your diving system and make it unique.
