Wetsuits and thermal clothing can play a vital role for all in water activities by helping to regulate your temperature. There is a vast variety of wetsuits available and the suit you choose will depend on the activity you are partaking in as well as the environment in which you do it.

Wetsuits are primarily made from a material called neoprene which is a synthetic rubber material popular with manufacturers due to its characteristics including buoyancy, flexibility and stretch. Neoprene material is packed full of air bubbles which help trap the wearers body heat providing insulation whilst in the water. A variety of thicknesses, styles and colours are available to suit different conditions.

Style;

• Shorties - a one piece suit with short arms and legs ending just above the knees and elbows. Often popular for warmer conditions  or where a person wants extra flexibility around elbow or knee joints. Generally 2-3mm thickness and recommended for use in waters above 18 degrees Celsius.
• Steamer/Wetsuit - a full length one piece suit covering arms, legs, and neck. Generally from 2-7mm thicknesses recommended for use in water from 16 degrees Celsius.
• Spearo/Freediving suit - these are commonly a 2 piece option with an open cell inner which causes the suit to perform like a second skin limiting water movement and keeping the wearer warmer. For protection of the material it is imperative to lubricate prior to donning these suits. Commonly these range in thickness from 3-5mm.
• Semi-dry suits - generally thicker neoprene is used in these from 7mm and upwards. They are called semi dry as they don't allow as much water movement through the suit as a standard wetsuit but aren't fully dry like a drysuit. These suits will generally be fitted with a dry zip and have reinforced seals at the neck, wrist and ankles limiting water movement and keeping the wearer warmer. These suits are ideal for cooler temperatures and often used in waters between 15 and 24 degrees Celsius.
• Dry suit - a fully sealed full length suit that doesn't allow water to enter. These can come in a neoprene or shell style material and further insulation is provided to the wearer from undergarments being worn underneath. Commonly used in temperatures 16 degrees and below.
