Knives are a great accessory to most in-water activities and can be used as both a tool and safety device. Varying styles will cater to different uses and functions as well as different ways for being mounted to the body or to a diver's equipment. Different uses for knives include dispatching of fish, abalone tools, line and rope cutters. Mounting options include leg with straps, arm or forearm with armbands, weight belt or harnesses, BCD pockets and or inflator hoses. When positioning a knife you should consider ease of access for when it may be required.

Commonly knives are constructed from Titanium or Stainless steel that may also come with various coatings. Stainless steel does not mean that the knife is resistant to rust and proper cleaning and maintenance should be carried out to ensure longevity. Titanium knives are generally more expensive but a better quality material that will last better over time.
